You gave me the wings
You gave me the wings
But I fear the sky
For when I fly away
Who will ground me
And who will cover you from the blazing sun?

Marcela is the daughter of Oscar and Sandra, both of whom were born in Colombia but fell in love in New York. She graduated from Williams College with a degree in American Studies and a dual concentration in Africana Studies and Public Health. Currently working in Brooklyn, she administers free diabetes tests to high-risk minority communities. She is a poet, singer, and community health advocate who aspires to become a physician that will tackle health disparities in underserved communities. In a field where Latinas are vastly underrepresented, she hopes to inspire other women of color to pursue a career in healthcare. Her writing is largely inspired by her experience as a Colombian-American, first-generation daughter of working-class immigrants.
